The 12 Days of Literacy Strategies for Gifted Readers: Day 1 Five Pillars of Literacy

Day 1: Tool 1 Five Pillars Extensions

In anticipation of the release of my new book ‘Literacy Strategies for Gifted and Accelerated Readers’ I’ve created the 12 Days of Literacy Strategies and free tools for teachers.

We focus much of our reading instruction on teaching kids the five pillars of literacy: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Gifted readers, for the most part, have already conquered these pillars of literacy and need guidance on how to apply them with depth and complexity. The purpose of reading instruction for gifted readers is not to learn to read, but to read to learn.

Use the following extensions of the five pillars as you plan for reading instruction for your gifted and accelerated readers.
